I got interested in ham radio because: A NEIGHBOR HAD A HAM LICENSE, K0LFF, LARRY HOFFMAN AND I BECAME INTERESTED IMMEDIATELY UPON SEEING THOSE TUBES GLOWING. I WAS ABOUT 17 AND TOOK THE TEST IN LATE FALL OF 1959 FOR MY NOVICE LICENSE. IT WAS JUST A ONE YEAR LICENSE AT THAT TIME

Areas of expertise: AFTER THE ARMY SERVICE I BECAME INTERESTED AGAIN IN RADIO AND TOOK A COURSE BY MAIL ON THE GI BILL. RE ENTERED AMATEUR RADIO IN 1969 WITH A TECHNICIAN LICENSE AND A CALL WA0YVM. IN 1970 OPENED TV RADIO SALES AND REPAIR . IN 1979 GAINED MY FIRST CLASS FCC LICENSE. DESIGNED A RADIO CONTROL SYSTEM TO PUMP WATER FOR THE CITY OF NELSON. LATER I DESIGNED A CABLE TV SYSTEM IN THE CITY OF NELSON, OF WHICH I WAS A PARTNER WITH TWO OTHERS. I LATER BOUGHT THEM OUT AND IN 1989 SOLD THE SYSTEM TO CABLE USA OF KEARNEY, NE. IN 1994, I WENT TO WORK FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AS A BROADCAST ENGINEER, OVERSEEING THE RADIO AND TELEVISION BROADCASTING. HELPING STUDENTS IN THE CONTROL CENTER AND IN THE STUDIOS IN THE ABSENCE OF THEIR INSTRUCTORS. I WAS WITH THE COLLEGE FOR 10 YEARS AND RETIRED IN THE SUMMER OF 2004. I DESIGNED A FEW PARTICULAR THINGS FOR THE UNIVERSITY SUCH AS A TIMED SWITCHING SYSTEM THAT WOULD EMPLOY CLOCKS TO TELECAST THE PBS PROGRAMMING THAT CAME THRU OUR FACILITY AND INTO THE CABLE USA'S DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM TO SEVERAL NEARBY TOWNS SUCH AS MINDEN, HOLDREDGE AND SEVERAL OTHERS.

My favorite thing to do in ham radio is: AS A NOVICE, I WAS RESTRICTED TO A KEY USING ONLY CODE. ALSO, CRYSTALS WERE NEEDED SINCE A VFO WAS NOT ALLOWED AT THE NOVICE LEVEL. I MET JOE IN FOREST CITY MO OVER THE RADIO IN THOSE DAYS AND WE DID THE CW THING. NOW SINCE RETIREMENT, I HAVE DISCOVERED THE DIGITAL MODES. THEY HAVE SHARPENED MY TYPING SKILLS A LITTLE AND I COMMUNICATE IN SEVERAL MODES. RTTY THAT I USED IN THE SERVICE IS NOW AVAILABLE TO ME BY COMPUTER, PSK31, HELL SCHREIBER, MFSK 16 BOTH TEXT AND PICTURE, OLIVIA IN ITS MANY SPEEDS AND SLOW SCAN TV. SSTV IN ANALOG AND SSTV IN EASY PAL THAT IS DIGITAL. JUST AMAZING HOW WELL THEY WORK. ANYTIME I TALK TO OLD OR NEW HAMS I ALWAYS ASK IF THEY DO DIGITAL MODES AND TO MY SURPRISE, MANY HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM WORK. I MAY HAVE LEFT SOME OF THE DIGITAL MODES OUT, BUT HAVE TRIED MOST OF THEM. IT WILL BE INTERESTING WHEN 10 AND 15 METERS OPEN UP AND NOW WORKING THE WORLD BY DIGITAL WILL RENEW MY INTERESTS IN DX.

I would like to try the following new things in ham radio in the next 10 years: LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE, THE NEW SUNSPOT CYCLE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND THAT WILL BE SOME OF MY INTERESTS. INTERESTING NEW PEOPLE TO GET INTO THE HOBBY AND HELPING THOSE WHO ARE IN NOW TO CONVERT TO DIGITAL. ITS HARD TO FORESEE WHAT TYPES OF INTERFERENCE WE MAY ENCOUNTER WITH BROADBAND OVER THE POWER LINES, BUT MAYBE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THAT MAY NOT BE AS OVERWHELMING AS WE MAY THINK. KEEPING MY MIND ALERT WITH COMPUTERS AND OTHER COMPLEX THINGS, SO I CAN CONTINUE TO ENJOY THE HOBBY. I HAVE A LOOP ANTENNA DESIGN I WOULD LIKE TO TRY SOMEDAY, SO THAT WILL BE FUN.
